Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Laura Barrett
14 hardy runners braved the wind and icy temperatures to help map out locations of benches in the Dringhouses ward for Age Friendly York. While Carl manned HQ in the pub the rest of us ran out in 6 groups around different mapped areas and completed all of Dringhouses Ward apart from a dark and potentially soggy section of Hob Moor (which was left for a lighter and drier occasion as everyone's trainers were only just drying form the night before). Egg and Elyse were very speedy efficient and completed their section in record time. Louise waited for Kate and helped Carl to puzzle who was still to come. Debs and Amy did a lot of "trainspotting" on their section whilst Mitch and Ed's "Blair Mitch Project" turned into "Nightmare on Ed Street" when they found no benches in their patch. Katie, Leanne and Paul found 7 new benches but the 8th one that Katie found that went round and round didn't count. Laura and David managed to find 11 new benches, mostly in play areas and 4 in a very posh hidden square that they didn't know existed, plus a 12th garden bench that a shopkeeper had put out to highlight the lack of them near the shops. All in all a sucessful nights benchmarking and thankfully the sleet showers that were threatening with a few drops didn't materialise as despite the goodgymers being hardy in the rain the maps were less so.
Looks at how York does to make the place an age friendly city through World Health Organisation checks. Age Friendly York is currently looking at Getting Out And About and residents are saying they need benches to break up their journey so they can get to the shops and other places.
