Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Beth Nelson
Four West London GoodGymers, Ben, Klara, 'Big little' Beth and Beth teamed up with local resident, John and other local resident to help protect and nurture the Cherry Blossom tree beds on Staveley Road.
Local resident, John explained to the group what needed to be done to help protect these well known and very loved Cherry Trees of Chiswick - the tree beds needed to be dig out to help protect the bark from grass strimmers and to rid the trees of competition for water and nutrients from grass and weeds. John continued that the Council had recently planted a couple of new Cherry Blossom trees in gaps along the road, he pointed these younger looking trees - he had been watering and nurturing these carefully!
Everyone grabbed a tool, the garden waste bin and began making their way down to one end of the road. Klara, 'Big little' Beth and Beth armed with forks, teamed up and fork the fork. They weeded with precision around the tree beds, though some proved trickier and weedier than others! But they were not defeated in providing all the trees they tended to with some welcome clearance around their roots...all the water and nutrients will now be theirs! 😄
Over on the other side of the road, Ben, forked the line of Cherry Blossom trees making light work of the tree beds. The group headed down both sides of the road in perfect tandem, and you could clearly see the trees that had been dug out, which made for satisfying before and after shots of the tree roots.
After an hour we'd made it to the halfway point and had one full garden waste bin full of grass and weeds. We called it a day there as the GoodGym team would be back again on Wednesday to finish the job and we couldn't leave them with no work to do!
John thanked us for our help and kindly offered us some water and apple juice which paired wonderfully with 'Big little' Beth's banana cake. Klara said a quick hello to John's cat as we finished off our treats before heading our separate ways, cherry good work all!
