Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)
Wahey! We got another lovely new runner joining us last night - welcome, Amy. Let's give her a cheer, Hounslow.
It was a perfect running night yesterday- warm and still, and just right for our task. Or so we thought..
We met as usual at Chiswick Town Hall, where we first said big well dones to our racers this week. [Dave] https://www.goodgym.org/runners/dave-clarke-4a0815ee-710d-4e94-9219-9f3ceb1c93db) continues his weekly park run streak with another great Saturday morning run, while Jo smashed her 10k PB with a fantastic performance at the weekend. Amazing job!
Don't forget that park run is a weekly Saturday morning event across the country, where you can race 5k for free in a lovely supportive environment. Great for improving your speed and getting a good run in at the weekend. Osterley, Gunnersbury and Richmond are our closest, why not give them a bash?
We warmed up with some dynamic exercises, and at the same time, found out what each of us likes to put in our picnics. Smoked salmon, pork pies, scotch eggs, strawberries, crisps and cold pizza. I think we need to make this happen guys.
Our task this week was to do some surveys of the local over 60 community to find out what activities they like to do, and therefore how the council can better tackle social isolation in these groups. Sounds like an easy one, right? It proved trickier than we thought! There were a few issues identifying our respondees - argh, what if we offended people?! - but we got there in the end, and found out that Hounslow over 60s love yoga, painting, walking and...um, work.
We then moved over to the park to do an intense fitness session, kicking off with a series of drills chosen by the team. Thanks for the burpees, Amy! Then we smashed out a series of Flying 30s, working on alternating our pace and improving our form, before a game of British Bulldog to really get our blood pumping. Well done to Natasha and Andy who were the last ones standing! To round off the session we knocked out a few core exercises, which featured everybody's favourite, Russian Twists. Lovely!
After a short run back (where we bumped into a squirrel that had stolen our picnic - see picture!) we stretched out our aching muscles, and gave ourselves a well earned pat on the back. Hope to see you all next week to do some work at a local school that needs a hand. Sign up here, lovely people!
