Report written by Helena Waters
A special run report by Helena, Beth and Hanna !! BOOM!
A ‘sweet sixteen’ runners gathered at Old Spike, on an autumnal evening, safe in the knowledge we were heading back to a recently discovered, INDOOR task : Helping Peckham Vision prepare the Old Waiting Room at Peckham Rye station for their open studios event.
Part of Peckham Festival, the doors will be thrown open to the newly restored Waiting Room on a history & culture tour of Rye Lane sign up here
Peckham Vision, the community group behind the project, needed our help once again. After a LOT of heavy lifting & sweeping last week we arrived to a spread of sandwiches but more importantly, a tally of tasks.
Some of the team got their weight-training in straight away with the seemingly impossible task of moving a solid slab of concrete from one end of the cavernous hall to the other. Hardly able to lift it, but luckily we had our own Southwark engineer to hand (thanks Alberto!) who had an ingenious solution up his sleeve… laying the slab on rollers and simply pushing it along. Just like an Egyptian building the pyramids.
Others were brushing & prepping the walls and then sweeping & mopping the floor and stairway until the whole place glimmered. A floor the Blackpool Tower Ballroom would’ve envied.
While Sarah braved, oh no, we mean squealed away from some ridiculously big spiders under her piles of dust, Ellie and Rob were tasked with emptying the stinky swamp like, water bin onto the track. It was a smelly job but someone had to do it! Yuk!
Some more unlucky GoodGymers had the even less glamourous and perhaps should we say "Bog standard" task of scrubbing up some Victorian toilets. Some relics from the Waiting Room’s past, so that they could form part of the exhibition… it’s amazing what counts as art these days…
The final touches done in the nick of time, and with muscles aching from an evening of elbow grease, we made our merry way back to Peckham Rye green for an ‘Ellie-Special’ fitness challenge. The night of 10,000 Burpees Simple: 100 Burpees against the clock.
So with some tunes to spur us along (cue The Killers Mr Burp-side) safe to say, the team smashed it and finished the night high on endorphins before heading to our local for some vital post-run hydration.
**Special welcome to Southwark first-timers Natalie and Beth as well as brand new to GoodGym James and Sam. We look forward to welcoming you back next week! But rest assured we promise we won’t make you do any more Burpees!!
See you next time!!!
