Report written by James Poole
On a pleasant autumn evening, TEN of Goodgym's finest runners met to make Wanstead Community Allotments a prettier place and ran 6.5km in the process.
With Sarah and Simon popping out the woodwork (yay!) and Ellie back from a few weeks off, it was a full force team assembled at Wanstead House Community Association on Monday night. With the light fading fast it was a super quick briefing from Trainer James and then a short run to the allotments to help prepare the space for a Healthy Eating event launching in October.
The allotment has become one of the group's favourite projects and the state of the space has improved immeasurably since we started helping in July last year. The space will be used to host a healthy eating Halloween event for children and young adults who live in the area but it still needs some work to get in ready. That's where Goodgym step in.
With the light almost gone by 7:40pm there was only time for around 30 minutes of weeding before the group headed off into the streets to log some miles. Even with such a short time available the amount of weeding done was impressive and the space is definitely on its way to being ready.
After a 6.5km run around Snaresbrook and Wanstead the squad returned for a lengthy stretching session led by resident Physio, Ellie, who is showing the group a new stretch each week. Last night she introduced the team to the 'Cows Head' a brilliant seated stretch that opens the hips and stretches the glutes to the maximus.
A great fun evening doing good in the area. Props to everyone who came. If you want to get involved in recycling paint with RFP next week you can sign up here
Wanstead Community Allotments is a project run by Vision Redbridge. It is used by local schools and people with learning difficulties. It aims to teach children and adults about fruit and vegetables and healthy eating.
