22 GoodGymers ran 5km, helped Rose Bowl & Thornhill Square Gardens
Lovely evening, lovely people. Main news this Thursday is that the last GoodGym Monthly Drinks of the year is this Thursday in Stratford - come along
This week we were off to help Thornhill Square Gardens & Ramsey Flowers - both great community groups!
Rose Bowl Report by PB:
13 of us headed 2.5km to Rosebowl the back way via Highbury Fields, upon our arrival we met Paola from the Ramsey Flowers group who look after the garden behind the centre. Ramsey Flowers look after the woodlands in the area which we were their to help.
We split into teams of 5 people sweeping up leaves and the rest pulling down a 50 year old fence & ivy. As Paola explained ivy basically consumes everything around it, trees, plants and it seems a wired fence too. Armed with three pairs of cutters small teams started breaking down the fence - pulling and pushing!
Ivy Fence vs GGers
The rest of the team beautifully swept and bagged up over 15 bags of leaves along the paths in area - amazing work! There were some cheers when parts of the fence/ivy were carried away! After 40 minutes of heroic work we packed up and made out way home just as more fireworks started.
Thornhill Report by Aidan:
The cold weather has definitely kicked in but that didn’t stop 9 GG Islingtoners getting out and doing good. We headed to Thornhill Gardens where we had some mulch awaiting us.
Steve didn’t like the idea of Google Maps leading the way so he and Kike took the lead, confident in their abilities to lead the way...can you guess what happens next?
It turns out GoodGym Islington do too much good in too many different places; poor Steve and Kike got Thornhill confused with Barnsbury Gardens! Luckily Super Caroline was there to save the day and lead us round the corner to the correct Gardens. On the way we compared Steve and Kike to GG Islington’s regular loser Graham [loser as he gets people lost, not because we’re being mean :) ] Graham you now have some company in Kike and Steve!
Led into the dark
Getting to Thornhill we all understood why we need head-torches; it was pitch black. As we looked into the darkness we could see a light approaching...it was the lovely Anna! Anna put us to work on our mulching, we grabbed shovels, spades, wheelbarrows and buckets and got those flowerbeds covered in mulch.
Job done, Anna happy. We were ready for the trip back home. With Kike and Steve luckily not leading...
Brilliant evening, sign up next week here we are off to Whittington Park.
