Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
7 GoodGymmers hit the streets, took on a 6.5k run and shifted around 2 tons of sand
Oh yeah I tell you somethin'// I think you'll understand// When I say that somethin'// I want to hold your saaaaaand//I want to hold your sand// I want to hold your sand.
Who would have known The Beatles' song written in 1963 was actually a nod to a GoodGym task taking place in Haringey over 50 years later?
There we were. Seven GoodGymers back at the sandpit at the Rowland Children's Centre to fill it up and fill it good... mainly with sand, but also our positive vibes in time for the kids to dig, play and build some wicked sandcastles.
Following a warm up at the meeting point (including some funny looking high knees and hustles), off we trotted (via a #bridgepic) to the centre. We ran hard through the Lordship Rec and eventually got to the Centre, where we were greeted by Tony (the task owner).
This week we all grabbed a wheelbarrow and a trolley and headed over to the car park next door where the pallet upon pallet of sand lay. We loaded up and heaved and pushed the sand up the slope and back to the sandpit. Varon was there to slice the bags open and get ready for part two of the task.
It was a rigorous workout and some sweaty 20 minutes later, we had shifted a pallet and a bit of sand (over 1.5 tonnes of sand) to the pit.
Shake and Rake
Next up was the old shake and rake. We all grabbed the bags and shook out all the sand while a couple of us distributed and spread the sand far and wide with rakes and shovels. Less than 15 minutes later the pit was laid with yet more fresh sand. A job well done, but something tells me GG Harringey will be back there very soon.
After a quick leg exercise involving a few near misses, we were back on our way. As the night drew in, we ran hard back through the Rec for our final sprint finish and much needed warm down.
Shout out and plenty of cheers to Chris, who wouldn't let a bit of knee surgery get in the way of him taking part. And also to Cassie - good luck with the new school! No doubt some of the kids enjoying the sandpit will eventually come your way for some English Literature lessons... The GoodGym circle of life goes on.
