19 people run between 3-4.5k, shifted loads of rubbish and cleared fallen branches for London Nomad Community Space
A new year- a new start....or something like that. Actually it was much of the same- 19 nice people met up at Somers Town Community Centre and run to help out a local community project. Why change a winning formula?
This run was slightly different- it was a 'Starter Session' for those who hadn't come on a Group Run before. But everyone took to it like pro's- breezing through the run up to the Rochester Square near Camden Road.
Nomad Community Space
We were off to help London Nomad Community Group. They have taken over (with permission obvs) a disused old garden centre and are attempting to convert it into vibrant community space. They run Workshops, food growing areas and Spiritual healing sessions.
Squat
However until recently the Square had been used as a squat- there's rubbish everywhere. We had 2 jobs they needed a hand with. The outside of the squat is pretty overgrown, the guys wanted to chop the area back and clear a bunch of dead trees and branches. Here's Pritesh's description of proceedings;
On a clear cold night at Rochester Square eight brave souls helped out in the garden area. We were creating bundles of twigs/sticks that would either be used around the garden area or be burned. We split into two groups, one set about cutting up larger branches into a manageable size and bundled these together. The second group worked their way through the compost heap pulling out the larger sticks and branches that had found their way into the heap. Once this was done we bundled these together and added it to the growing pile of bundles from the other group. Ably assisted by Shaun’s mini power lights (GG gadgets rule!) we had a ‘bundle’ of fun before setting off on the run back to base.
The Kitchen Sink
They needed some GoodGym muscle to shift a load of grotty old sofas and mattresses that had been hanging around so a while. It was a tough task (requiring some pretty astute spacial awareness) but we moved everything....including the kitchen sink. I reckon we shifted 4 sofas, 2 wardrobes, a stinky old mattress, stacks of drawers, and 2 kitchen worksurfaces (complete with sink) in under 30mins. Good work.
Canal Gears
We made our way home to Somers Town via the canal- practising a few different running Gears on the way home. We even mustered a burst around Granary Square to finish. Nice work everyone.
Camden
AIC's cold weather shelter helps 16 Londoners each and every week - you'll be making sure things are ready and inviting for the evening's guests :)
