Another session in the calm and peaceful surroundings of Spital cemetery, joining Cllr Karen Davies' regular team of volunteers. My focus this week was on the ivy-capped headstone of Colonel Joseph Robert Raines, MKW. A Google search after the task informed me that this stands for Military Knight of Windsor. Originally known as the Alms Knights, the MKW were established by Edward III and are retired army officers who are given accommodation in Windsor Castle in return for numerous ceremonial duties. You can read more about them here: https://www.stgeorges-windsor.org/about-st-georges/whos-who/military-knights/
