A Prickly Business
2 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in Windsor and Maidenhead.
- Monday, 29th of August 2022
Georgeta and Sheila went to visit Mr M, a delightful 100-year old gentleman, whose garden had become over-run with brambles. He wanted us to reclaim the land so that he can grow tomatoes and potatoes. What a legend! We were joined by Valerie, who was the referrer for the task, and we all got stuck in, clearing the brambles and bagging them up for disposal. As we worked, we were visited by the local wildlife - a juvenile robin, next door's cat, numerous spiders and a beautiful irridescent green beetle. At the end of the session, the area was much clearer, and we had amassed 6 bags of garden waste plus an extra huge pile. An extra challenge was presented to us, to rescue a pair of loppers which fell down a deep gap between a retaining wall and a fence. We tried using several different tools to try to reach them until Valerie managed to dive down into the narrow gap and triumphantly pulled them out. Mr M was very appreciative of our efforts, but we had so enjoyed this task for such an amazing gentleman. He is a fascinating character who built his own house and is still living in it over 70 years later! He is looking forward to next year's harvest.
