Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Madhan
I made a call to Mrs.C's daughter Ms.J under the gazebos of Hollybush estate to check if the mission is going ahead as it was pouring down. I got a confirmation and walked for 10 minutes to reach the spot.
Ms.J called me back just before I reach home and told me that I can go ahead and cancel the mission if I couldn't make it because of the bad weather. I told her that GoodGymers are resistant to any weather and entered the house. Mrs.C has dementia and Ms.J is the carer for her mom.
10 years back a group of 8 GoodGymers, 7 women and a man helped clear the garden - Ms.J
I was surprised when Ms.J said that. We then went downstairs to go to the garden and I was handed a lopper and a pair of gloves.
Today's task was to clear the weeds which the garden is full of. But weeds are level 2. On level 1 there were thick spiked brambles. I started chopping down the brambles.
Are you okay? You are soaked - Ms.J every 10 minutes
I was persistent and little by little I can see the ground showing up. I then took the fork to move them to the bag. But the fork's handle broke as it was too old. The rake met with the same destination. After successfully breaking two tools, I decided to proceed with loppers alone as it was the newest among all tools.
I piled the brambles and bind weeds into a spaghetti roll and shoved them into the bag which filled half the bag. I managed to clear one corner of the garden in 45 minutes before the bag was full and Ms.J told me to finish for the day as it was raining heavily and concerned about my health.
It was a challenge to take the garden waste bag upstairs as the stairs were narrow. After battling for 5 minutes, the bag finally made it out of the house. I've put them near the bin and bid goodbyes and started running in my soaked shoes towards Bernie Cameron Community centre for the final mission of my day.
