Report written by Andrew Waters
5 somewhat jaded GG members bused, walked or ran to Alexander Road Community Gardens to help this little gem of a community project on an overcast autumnal day.
“Jaded” because this had been a BIG SHEFFIELD GOOD GYM WEEKEND - celebrating Super Steve’s 100th Park Run and the birthdays of Tremendous Tom and Sensational Sarah – as well as fitting in a bonfire & fireworks evening. And, as well as tiredness, there may have been a bit of over-indulgence on the drinking front …
But proof, once again, that Sheff City is the Best City and our Good Gym group is a great community of friendship.
We welcomed over the weekend Rob from Barnet GG – not only did he make it to the Park Run but also joined us for the evening festivities and today’s community mission before heading back on a somewhat tortuous bus replacement train journey back down south. Respect Rob – you’re welcome back any time!
So, the mission … lots of leaf clearing and hedge trimming – really tidying up the garden. And we found some abandoned birds’ nests - Steve said he’d Tweet about it …
Fuelled by cookies, apples, plums and tea given to us by the garden volunteers we slowly began to shake off our hang overs – although only a subsequent bacon sandwich and a lie down in a darkened room fully did the job for me.
The Garden has recently won a Green Apple Award and is looking for a possible link up with Good Gym to celebrate its 25th birthday next year – so do come along and help – they’re a lovely bunch of people and there’s a community mission here each month.

Hi Rob, you should have had an email from GG Mission Control about 2pm to register that you were there, WhatsApp me if you didn’t and I’ll try and sort it. Great to have you in Sheff and good to hear you’ve made it home safe. Cheers
