Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Beth Sawyer
I was joined on this mission by Danny, who arrived having just completed a lap of Hampstead Heath - my own run there was a much easier couple of km. we were greeted by Ms S, who seemed very excited about our arrival. She had laid out the tools, compost, gloves and everything else she thought we might need, so we were able to get to work quite quickly.
Over the years, Ms S has transformed a patch of land outside her house from a wilderness into a lovely garden. Danny was handed a spade and dug some holes so that Ms S could plant some ferns. My task was a bit more colourful - planting flowers in one of the borders.
With the digging complete, Danny helped Ms S to hang a mirror on the wall of the garden to maximse light in what was otherwise quite a shady spot. There was no ladder, but Ms S had a solution: a victorian chair that transforms into a step ladder. Meanwhile I watered the newly-planted flowers and straightened the edge of the border.
With our work done, we were invited to join Ms S for a cup of tea, which we gladly accepted. It was fascinating to talk to her about her life and about the changes she has seen in London over the years. She was also interested in us and in goodgym, so we shared a bit about what goodgym does. She was very impressed and I felt happy to be a part of such a wonderful organisation.
Overall this was a really enjoyable task that made a difference both practically and socially.
