Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by John Shirley
When Galleywall Nature Reserve arranged a Sunday afternoon Open Day, for once GoodGym was able to work there in the daylight. I helped clear a space to move a gazebo into. There were some earth-filled planters in the way but I removed the rotting wood surroundings, and shovelled earth into a wheelbarrow to clear the area.
After a busy hour, with many trips across the area to empty the wheelbarrow, I was offered coffee and cake and was told how appreciative the volunteers are of GoodGym's weekday efforts, using headtorches in the dark.
The Galleywall Nature Reserve is a small plot of land which has been owned by Southwark Housing for decades. It was used by the adjacent Galleywall School for some time before the school closed. It has been maintained by a group of volunteers, the Friends of Galleywall Nature Reserve, since 2004, under an ongoing long-term agreement with the council.
