Sheila went to help out at a special work party organised by Karen Davies and the Friends of Spital Cemetery to coincide with the Big Help Out for the Coronation weekend. Despite the damp weather, there was a good turnout with a dozen or so vounteers turning up to help. We split into groups and our group tackled a huge lump of ivy covering a grave, that we had been working on at previous sessions.Effective use of a handsaw soon enabled the huge knot of ivy root to be removed from the grave, and allow the headstone to be replaced. We also worked on revealing the outline of the grave by clearing away the weeds. We hope that the owners of the headstone, Susan and Collett Read, who both died in the 1920s, approve We then moved on to tackle a huge ivy bush which was growing very healthily. 30 mins of hacking and pulling revealed the very top of a stone monument, (possibly a cross?), which we will look forward to revealing at the next session
