Report written by Lewisham runner
This was GoodGym Lewisham’s 43rd trip to St Mary’s church… well OK, not quite ;oD maybe 5th or 6th in reality but still this particular task has become a labour of love for the group since we started it last summer, and we couldn’t turn down the chance to return to see through the massive task of restoring all the railings and gates which surround this historic building to their smart blackness.
"Brush with Greatness"
Works began using the now familiar steel brushes to scrape off the old, flaking paint from the remaining railings before a brief washdown ensured surface were clean and ready for painting. From an initial few, our numbers soon grew and before long all panels and gates were being given attention whilst our unofficial canine mascot, Molly, looked on fairly nonplussed and rather more interested in the sticks on offer!
"It’s been Emulsional"
With pots and brushes distributed, it was time to get smartening and some very effective teamwork saw the railings painted at pace. While most of us were able to daub at will, one of Lewisham’s newest recruits (Martin, previously of GG Westminster) took on the more challenging task of painting the bollards in the pathway alongside the church and did a great job of it, delivering precise white bands around each!
"Hail to the Helpers"
The weather played some fun tricks during the Mission, with sun, wind, rain and at one point even hail sent to greet us. Combining to make for a fairly chilly affair, Emma and Vic took a brief break from proceedings to show off some impromptu dance moves and generate a bit of warmth (and laughter)! Thankfully the sun won out while a new bride and groom enjoyed the beautiful adjacent Therapeutic Garden for a few post-nuptial pictures, whilst we held our breath that no outfits would be spoiled by contact with our freshly painted railings…
"No Black of Enthusiasm"
With relatively few sections of railings remaining, everyone was keen to see the task through to its conclusion, leading to an extended stay for our intrepid runners. The experience was improved no end by Marion and her helper’s kind (and repeated) supplying of hot tea and coffee, plus varied and delicious biscuit options.
"Last Ma(rti)n Standing"
While everyone else had downed brushes after a productive 2 hours or so, Martin won the enthusiasm award for refusing to leave until the very last railing was covered – I hope you’re not still there?!
