Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Nathan Wood
As I arrived at Thorlands this Saturday, it seemed the first task for me was to locate the team, all of which had journeyed to a previously unseen secret storage area of Simon's. From there we carried back a couple of scavenged wooden poles 👀
When we made it back, Simon gave us the task of removing nails from some planks of wood. For the bare-eyed crew we thought stray flying nails would not be a good idea, but we decided Jo's spectacles could be collateral damage in the unlikely event of flying nails (sorry Jo!). We left Jo and Alex to it sorting that out and the rest of us moved across to the kitchen garden with some tools. We dug deep and with determination to get the roots of some bindweed roots which had been previously missed, and were causing a re occurrence of bindweed running up the gate.
Thorlands Gardens is a food growing club based on an east Lambeth housing estate, in Camberwell. There was a shared vision to move forward with a zero miles food project on unused and unloved brownfield spaces. There was an understanding that residents of all ages could volunteer simply for the value that experience gives to individual wellbeing. There is also the added bonus of sharing the fruits of the labour, which in this case is healthy produce, such as vegetables, salads, herbs, and edible flowers.
