SESSION ORGANISER
Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
5 keen Goodgymmers braved the heat, and cycled and walked to Elizabeth House Food Bank last night. The project has been really active over the last few months- providing weekly shopping parcels for over 100 households around the local neighbourhood. Friday evenings are a dedicated set-up session, and then the volunteers pack and sort individual deliveries and packages all day on Saturday. Our Goodgym crew have signed up to offer support on Friday evenings for the rest of August, to help with breaking down this massive essential undertaking into smaller chunks!
By the time we arrived, the main hall was full of donations from local businesses and the general public. Our first task was to organise all the supplies, and effectively make the place look like a walk-in supermarket! Steve and Adrian were tasked with breaking down cereal boxes to save space in the centre (loads of cereal from my childhood!), while Jackie and John lifted plenty of boxes of fruit and vegetables (all in good condition- only quality produce to be donated).
Between our team of about 10 volunteers, we completely transformed the centre in about 45 minutes. For our final task of the evening, we cut up industrial-size egg boxes into 4 compartments, filled them with eggs, and strung them together with elastic bands. These became small parcels for visiting families, and a bit safer to transport for the delivery drivers.
Wonderful work everyone. Sign up here for next week's visit if you are inspired to get involved!
