Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Aimee (she/her)
Two goodgymers helped Urban Green in Kenton Park on a autumnal Saturday morning. The task was all about maintaining lines of sight through the park to reduce the amount of minor antisocial behaviour in the park.
Last year we helped out with a similar cutting back back task so this was cutting back the last years worth of growth to stop brushes forming around the base of trees blocking the view through the park. We were also giving the trees a a haircut as Mike calls it trimming the over hanging branches so people can see and walk under then.
We had a tea break half way through where mike showed off the percy pigs he won in an Urban Green competition for guinea pig awareness week at the end of September, by photo shopping his origami guinea pig in numerous locations including the Eiffel tower. It was very cute! I was shocked to learn they don't have a tail as I always assumed they had a little one like a hamster.
After the break we continued crowning tree and cutting back vegetation. Mike founds us a couple of conkers. We were impressed by the difference we had made in a short amount of time with the parts we have done being much easier to see through. Charlotte pointed out we have now done 80 community missions with Urban Green, hopefully we can get to 100! Look out for future community missions.
There’s a greener side to our city. A vibrant, more open side. It should be celebrated, Nurtured, Enjoyed by everyone. Our allotments and parks are the lungs of our city. We’re here to breathe new life into them. We are Urban Green Newcastle.
