Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)
During my lunch break, I ran over to Age UK in Bellingham (5k run) to pick up a smartphone for Mr. B, who lives a further 4k run, but luckily towards my home.
I arrived at Mr. B's place at 13:00 to drop off his phone and was told his carer would be there. However, I knocked on the door several times and eventually, Mr. B showed up at the door and invited me in. He was just by himself in this almost empty flat.
I was meant to just drop off the phone, but I took it upon myself to show him how to operate his new smartphone. However, I realised pretty quickly that it will be more of a hindrance than a help as he was pressing everything and anything on the smartphone. In the end, we came to an agreement that it should be left charging and that he should only pick it up when he hears the phone ringing. Yet, I wonder if this would happen if he has his TV on the maximum all day. After spending 25 minutes with him, I had to rush home as my extended lunch break was coming to an end. I did feel uneasy leaving him in the state that I left him in - more confusion than certainty and it would have certainly help to have his carer there at the time.
In the end, I ran in a big circle and it was good to get out during my lunch break.

Well done Sam, you did everything you could! His carer will have more time to familiarise him with the phone.
