14 GG Yorkies came out on the hottest day EVER to help out at Glen Gardens.
Cor, it was a hot one today. Everyone arrived at the Premier Inn already out of breath just from getting to the start of the run. With the sun still beating down over York, we set off at a very gentle pace via the amazing York Minster.
We arrived at Glen Gardens to a hive of activity. There were people playing bowls, local volunteers helping out with the gardening, people chilling out enjoying the evening sun and dog walkers a-plenty.
Adi, who coordinates the volunteering activities in the park, met us with a wheelbarrow full of tools and divided us into three groups to tackle three different areas. One group was shifting leaves, debris and pulling up ivy, whilst the other groups were weeding in different areas.
I'm a bit out of my comfort zone knowing what's a weed and what's a plant! - Graham, GG Yorkie
Horticulture is not our strong point. We did have to keep asking which were the weeds. Team Griffin were on it with the plant knowledge and should always be placed in charge on future tasks involving gardening.
Once we'd actually figured out what bits needed removing, all the effort was going into breaking up the hard, dry ground. Solid as a rock. Luckily Adi was on hand providing us all with ice cold refreshments which was amazing!
One of the weeding groups finished off doing a bit of planting at the other end of the park.
That can't be a plant, can it? Do we need to put that in the ground? - Graham, again.
We then ambled gently over to a shady patch of grass to work through a set of core exercises including:
Another gently paced run saw us head back through town, before Becky and Aidan got totally carried away and raced up Micklegate. The lights were in our favour for the first time ever so everyone picked up the pace for the finishing straight and Bev totally smashed it, beating everyone to the door with a huge grin on her face!
We are so, so grateful to Premier Inn for leaving us a massive supply of water every week, we needed it tonight. Hope normal weather resumes next week so we can all get lunging again..
