Report written by Anita (she/her)
One GoodGym runner, having cycled over from Richmond on the blissfully empty roafs, on the 16.00 - 20.00 shift at City Harvest's Acton Warehouse. Helping to unload and repack pallets of surplus food ready for redistribution to a network of organisations that feed some of London's most vunerable people.
An articulated lorry delivered surplus food from Amazon Direct on 4 huge wooden pallets and we then set about sorting the donation into food categories (dairy, raw meat & raw fish, ready meals/cooked meat, fruit, veg, bread).
Once through the initial sort, we then tackled each food category, pulling out spoilt food and food requiring immediate freezing or redistribution and then packing the rest into stackable crates ready for collection by City Harvest's fleet of vans.
Finally, we set to clearing up the warehouse and sorting the myriad of slightly different 'stacking and nesting supermarket crates' ready for the next delivery on Tuesday morning.
Along with The Felix Project and Fareshare, City Harvest is part of 'The London Food Alliance' who are co-ordinating the collection and redistribution of surplus food across all London Boroughs. Their work ensures that the food reaches charities and organisations helping to feed and provision the most vunerable and in need including those experiencing food hunger during the Covid-19 emergency. www.cityharvest.org virginmoneygiving.com/FoodforLondonNOW
