9 runners met at City Harvest to help with their mission of 'rescuing food for the hungry' and boy did they earn their good deed for the day!
Split out into a few groups, some were sorting food from the giant fridge to check it was in date and for it to be separated into categories, with another group working to empty the food that couldn't be used, from its packaging, to be sent off as food waste, which will eventually be made into energy!
Mozzarella and curry anyone?
The bins of food that couldn't be used were steadily filled with mouldy oranges, chicken drumsticks, fish, gnocchi and an industrial amount of mozzarella and curry sauce! Danny got stuck in with scooping out hummus too!
Leaning tower of pizzas
There was plenty of work to be done by the 'sorters', and the 'emptiers' joined in, helping sort out a van full of donations from an online retailer that takes its name from a rainforest.... With most of it still in date, it was a matter of filling up and stacking up crates with fruit, veg, dairy products, dry goods and raw and uncooked meat, with the stuff just on its date separated to be frozen for another day. With a lot of pizzas with a use by date of today, the runners were allowed to take some home, helping fuel their runs, and reducing the food waste further!
After 2 hours of hard work, the group went their separate ways with pizzas to cook and safe in the knowledge all their hard work would be helping the charity reach more people with perfectly good food that otherwise would have gone to waste.
If you missed out this time, you can join us again the first Saturday of next month when we do it all again!
City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way, by distributing to organisations that feed the hungry.
