Report written by Tara Shanahan
It’s been a whole year of getting fit and doing good Brighton style! This time last year the heavens opened and 38 Brighton Goodgymmers got soaked to the bone transforming the nursery garden at the Brighthelm Centre. A year on the weather was much improved and we graduated to primary school!
In tonight’s news we congratulated Martin for getting a parkrun PB and going under 20 minutes. A fantastic effort in hot conditions. No first timers tonight but it was great to welcome back Rosie for her second run.
Tonight’s task took us to a school with probably the most interesting outdoor area in the city, if not the country. Moulsecoomb Primary School understand the importance of an outdoor learning environment and have done amazing things with their outdoor area including planting loads of trees, an orchard, a veg garden and a pond. Perhaps most impressive are the six historical replica buildings including an iron age round house with a thatched roof and a miniature medieval house, all built with the involvement of the children and used as a historical learning resource as well as a great place to play.
This weekend the school is having their open day so our task was to help get the gardens looking tidy. This involved pulling up the ubiquitous bindweed, which does seem to be keeping us pretty busy throughout the summer! But it is a satisfying job and before too long we’d filled a wheelbarrow full of it.
Back to base for a quick stretch followed by a visit to The Earth & Stars to celebrate our first birthday. A huge and massive thank you to Helena for organising, and raiding the party accessories cupboard and bringing the delicious birthday cookie!
No parkrun meet up this week as loads of us are busy so we are postponing to the 21st July at Hove Prom.
Good luck to all running the Phoenix 10k tomorrow, run quick and enjoy the second half of what will hopefully be an historic England game.
A compassionate learning community. An award winning nursery and primary school offering learning opportunities outside the classrooms; with water saving, wildlife habitat and a chicken garden.
