Ashley and Pete took on a run from Jury's Inn Derby to meet the rest of the team at St Matthew's Church for another gardening session. They were met with celebratory brownies that birthday girl Ellen had brought along much to everyone's delight.
Before the group took on some tidying in the garden of rest, David from the church invited them all to visit the crypt which houses graves of the Evans family. The group were fascinated by the fact some of the family had lived to be in their 80s with the eldest being 94 when they died - some feat for people living well over 100 years ago. Ellen spotted that the centre of the cross was made from Blue John stone and the group spent the first part of their session learning about the crypt and it's location in relation to what rooms were in the church above it, how drainage works in there and the different family members housed in the crypt. The group can confirm there weren't any rats or spiders on their visit and were seriously impressed with the quality of paintwork down there and general upkeep of the room.
For tonight's visit to the church, David wanted some help clearing the meadow area of the garden of rest, to prepare it for more graves and for trees to be planted by the wall. Some of the trees needed cutting back and grass needed clearing. The group set to work and soon found two new friends - a mouse and a frog in the grassed area.
After Pete had enough off cuts from trees to start celebrating bonfire night early and Ashley and Ellen had impressively pruned back a tree with just hand tools and enthusiasm, it was time to say goodbye to David, sample some more of Ellen's birthday brownies and discuss plans for our next session. David has taken some more postcards from the group to spread the word about GoodGym Derby to potential task referrers and of course volunteers.
Ashley and Pete headed back to Jury's Inn via a run through Darley Park, newly fuelled by brownies.
Thanks to everyone who came and to Ellen who brought along some tools for the group to use (and for the brownies).
