On a lovely Saturday afternoon 4 Goodgymmers made their way to Hackney to help Mrs Rosemary create a community garden. Becky was the first to arrive and as such the lucky one to receive a special blessing from a grateful passing bird. Mrs Rosemary welcomed both her and Phil and explained her vision for the garden – to make it a growing space for people with diabetes. She wants to make people think about sourcing food rather than just find their vegetables in the supermarket. To this purpose the garden space needed to be cleared of all the scrubs & growth & little trees and anything else growing there, which was a lot! Phil & Becky got stuck in and were soon after joined by Kate (accidently ran 24 iso 18k on her way) and Peter (bit late after earlier mission ran over). The size of the task soon became clear, this was only one battle in the war against wild growth, but a war Goodgym certainly intends to win! With a variety of tools finger thick brambles were cut down to size and innocent looking little plants with inch thick roots dug out, grass ripped out and so much more. Conversation flowed and before we realised there were 2 hours gone by and it was time to start thinking about rounding things off. All tools safely gathered up and a couple of quick pics to show the progress made and pile of removed plants the team said their goodbyes to a grateful Mr Rosemary and made their ways home.

Although the team made great progress and reached about halfway the sizeable garden, there is still more work to be done, so I guess Goodgym will be back to finish the job!
