4 Ran to set up planters by Wanstead tube station
As always sessions with the Wanstead community gardeners are entertaining and varied!
We began by locating bricks to support the planter and some hard core to fill the bottom of it, to allow adequate drainage. we then ran to a house that was donating an old water tank that was to be used for the job. Heavy enough as it was, it was also fairly full of water, and in a tight corner of the garden. This was quickly retrieved and loaded into a car so it could be transported back to the station whilst we ran back.
Once there Peter drilled holes in the bottom and Matt removed the pipes that were sticking out of the sides and soon it was ready to be filled. After a quick stop for more polystyrene, used to insulate the inside of the planter to reduce drying out in hot weather Kris and Ken set off to retrieve some more soil and planter number 2. This was slightly easier to load as most of the bottom had fallen out!
Unfortunately the topsoil was inaccessible, due to bedtime stories, so we returned with just the planter and more hard core to line it with. This was soon put in place on the traffic island and suitably lined ready for soil to be added at a later date.
Job done as far as we could we set of on a short run to check on the planting by Snaresbrook station, rounding the evening off to just over 5k. Great work on such a scorching hot evening! James is back for next weeks run, but I will be back soon for more adventures!
Run by Marian this group helps take unloved patches of land in Wanstead and Snaresbrook and turn them into beautiful patches of flowers and plants.
