On a cold night seven runners from GoodGym Redbridge planted 200 bulbs and made Wanstead a more beautiful place – well it will be in the spring.

At GoodGym Redbridge we’re made of hardy stuff. Rather than stay in doors and watch Eastenders, we headed out into the real East End to work with Wanstead Community Gardeners (WCG) and get involved in some night gardening.

After the usual briefing the group set of to meet Marian from WCG and to be briefed on the evening’s task. WCG have recently been given 2,000 crocus bulbs as part of a charity initiative and our mission was to plant all these bulbs on the roundabout opposite the George pub. This is the second time the group has worked on this site and it is beginning to look pretty special. Marian informed us that this was the perfect time to plant bulbs and come the spring the scruffy flower bed would become a carpet of purple and yellow.

As if planting 200 bulbs wasn’t enough Peter and Tim headed off down the High Street to the Corner House to plant perennial sunflowers which will brighten up a bed on Grove Park.

With the task done in rapid time the group then headed out for a 7km run - expertly led as usual by Tina - around the local area exploring Wanstead Park before heading back to base for some easy stretching.

A great task and fantastic feedback from Marian who loves having us involved. Good work Team Redbridge.
