.....to misquote Dire Straits!

Well we certainly did get a fantastic free firework display on our run last night. Not only did GoodGym Huddersfield deliver a few hundred leaflets for Kirkwood Hospice we also enjoyed an almost continuous display of flashes and bangs as we ran around the streets of Moldgreen and Dalton. Kati Law, Zena Whalley, Wendy Redmile and myself were delivering flyers for the Kirkwood Hospice “Light Up a Life” campaign, very appropriate on a night when the sky was quite literally lit up with all manner of pyrotechnics.

A group run on November the 5th was too good an opportunity to miss, so we started with a little climb up the cobbled path to Kilner Bank. From this vantage point we were able to see many hundreds of glittering explosions in the skies above the entire district. Lovely as it would have been to stay and spectate for longer there was work (and running) to be done, so we set off at a jog down to Moldgreen.

GoodGym Huddersfield love a leaflet delivery and we were soon posting flyers through letterboxes, up and down garden paths in strict formation. Two GoodGymmers on each side of the road, leafleting alternate properties making good progress as we go. Grosvenor Road, Kingston Avenue, Dalton Green Lane, we were rattling through our planned route (and our supply of leaflets).

Forty five minutes later it was time for a little more energy expenditure, and we arrived at Dalton Rec for our fitness session. In a feat of extremely good planning, or perhaps good luck we rocked up at the very moment a local household was reaching the climax of their pyrotechnic display. Something which took our minds off the fact that following all the recent rain the playing field was slightly soggy and our feet were getting increasingly wet.

In the light of such an impressive firework extravaganza my own efforts were somewhat overshadowed, but the focus of this week’s fitness session was around pace judgement. The plan was to light a sparkler (positioned safely in the ground) and then run as far as you could before turning around and timing you return run to arrive back at the sparkler the exact moment it extinguished itself. Note greatest success perhaps and the wet conditions underfoot didn’t help, maybe more practice needed the next time GoodGym night co-includes with November 5th.

All that was left then ways the run back to the Stadium, accompanied all the way of course by the bangs and flashes of tens of thousands of pounds of fireworks going up in smoke. Thanks to all last night’s GoodGymmers for your efforts.
