Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Bristol runner
We were forecast heavy rain today, so it was with some relief that our allocated mission time slot was largely rain free, other than a bit of drizzle that kept us cool whilst we worked.
Meeting up with RVS volunteer J who had brought over some tools to help with the mission we were introduced to the lovely Ms H who offered us a cup of coffee and chatted to us about her life on the buses before we got stuck into giving her back garden a good tidy up.
It was great to accompany Nicole on her first GoodGym mission today and chat with her about her work and study plans, a highlight being Ms H exclaiming that Nicole must have a very big brain!
Fortunately for us, someone else had been over earlier in the week to cut back some of the garden already, leaving us with the task of turning over the soil, which had been wonderfully softened up by the recent rainfall, so that Ms H can hopefully plant some veg - she’s particularly keen on growing some corn and runner beans.
We cleared the garden waste that had been piled in the middle of the garden to create a compost area in the corner which Ms H hopes to be able to use to help her grow her vegetables in the future.
Having cleared the garden, we then cut back the brambles and bushes around the perimeter of the garden, before using a hoe and spade to remove the build up of soil and grass along the pathway.
With J working alongside us, we soon had the garden looking much tidier, much to the delight of Ms H. A nice mission for a lovely lady and well done Nicole!
