On National Clean Air Day, Middlesex University became a vibrant hub for environmental engagement, and GoodGym Barnet was right at the heart of it. Representing both GoodGym and the Tiny Forest initiative, we participated in an inspiring event that showcased a variety of sustainable actions and ideas aimed at improving our local environment.

The event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life, including local residents, university academics, students, and even the Mayor of Barnet. Each brought their unique perspective to the table, contributing to a rich dialogue about the importance of air quality and sustainable living.

One of the key takeaways from the event was the alarming state of air quality in Barnet. Despite its suburban location, Barnet's air quality is surprisingly worse than some parts of central London. This discrepancy is partly due to the absence of measures like the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which has been instrumental in reducing pollution in central areas. The Mayor's speech highlighted the critical need for local actions to mitigate air pollution and its detrimental effects on health and wildlife.

Several presentations provided insightful data and practical advice:

Academics emphasized the link between poor air quality and premature deaths, urging us to understand the statistics and push for meaningful action. The focus was on making small, manageable changes that collectively lead to a greener lifestyle.

Barnet Councilor introduced personal air quality monitors, enabling individuals to assess their own exposure to pollutants. This initiative empowers residents to take control of their environmental impact. Middlesex University showcased "The Mini Beasts of Barnet," a children's book that uses art to teach environmental responsibility. The project underscores the importance of nurturing an eco-conscious mindset from a young age.

A captivating presentation on beekeeping revealed fascinating facts about bee society. For instance, while all worker bees are female and daughters of the queen, only about 20% actively work, with a mere 5% doing the majority of tasks. Male drones, interestingly, are unable to feed themselves and can access any hive.

GoodGym Barnet is dedicated to continuing the momentum from National Clean Air Day. By participating in such events, we aim to inspire and mobilize our community towards a healthier, more sustainable future. Whether through planting trees in our Tiny Forest or promoting active lifestyles, every action counts.

Join us in our journey to create a cleaner Barnet. Together, we can make a significant impact on our environment and well-being.
