Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Nicky West
2 early bird GoodGymers battled through commuters to do a morning good deed enabling an isolated older person to return home from hospital.
Our task was to move an existing bed downstairs to a spare bedroom to help free up space in the main bedroom for a new hospital bed to be delivered.
Due to the location and shape of the flat the mission felt more like a game of Tetris than removals, as each piece of furniture moved required at least another 2 pieces of furniture to then be moved before it would fit! We also had to still ensure that the space remained homely and usable for both the owner, her family members and carers.
As is often the case with GoodGym removal missions, the guiding words of Ross from Friends came into their own as we “pivot”ed the bed around the corners of the tight stair case and down into the spare bedroom, only to find that a wardrobe blocked the entrance by less than an inch! The existing bed and chest of drawers in that room then needed to be moved to enable the wardrobe to be moved and then the spare bed could eventually slot into place!?! (Cue the Tetris theme tune if you know it!)
We finished off by helping the Occupational Therapist to remove rugs that could be potential trip hazards around the house before tidying up and heading home. This may have been a quickish mission but it will make a huge difference by enabling the lady to come home from hospital to be with her friends and home comforts.
