A fabulous four ladies gathered at the community allotment today to help out with some jobs. The sky had done most of the watering for us this morning (and we are due another deluge tonight) but nonetheless Angela watered some of the tubs and the covered bed as they looked a bit dry. The slugs were out in force! Gillian topped up the water butts with the hose while Anne took the old broad bean stalks out of the bed as well as the weeds. Angela and Sheila got a good workout by emptying some bags of horse poo into some beds which needed topping up, and covered it with topsoil. It will be left over the winter for nature to work it's magic. We had enough time to also do some weeding and take some brambles out of the surrounding hedges. And we all took some produce home too. A satisfying hour's work

The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
