Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Alex Eggs
It was a Hallowe'en special at GoodGym Tower Hamlets this week, and a spooky task at the local cemetery park proved to be as scary as it sounded! Our fantastic group of 23 GoodGymmers (including some very welcome first-timers Eloise, Jonny and Will) arose to the challenge of the October clock change and plunging temperatures, to take part in the task which involved a 4-mile round trip and some clearing of ivy. Equipped with maps and head torches, we located the bag of gloves and the area of ivy to be tackled then set to work. There were wonderful scenes of relieving pathways & headstones of the troublesome weed, removed with such a flourish, but then disaster struck - in the form of a wasp nest. In what must have been the last live nest in the northern hemisphere, several of the stinging bugs flew out and despite our best efforts to clear the area, a few victims were claimed. Anna, Hass, Fergal, Jay & Eloise did however continue the task in which we managed to dispatch two huge piles of ivy to the compost heap at the other side of the park. To add to the fun, I myself took a tumble on the way back, which was greeted by the best Hallowe'en shriek one could have hoped for on such a task. My sincerest apologies to those who got stung and I hope it won't deter you from future visits on what was otherwise a good task to share with such lovely company! Look forward to seeing you at the next one!
