The day started off bright and clear, but chilly. Roads were icy, which didn’t bode well for working outside 😬.

Arriving at the site, I was met with a field and heap of bark chippings, frosted in white.

Surveying the memorial area, it was clear that there had been little or no maintenance for some time. Grass had grown between and around the saplings, choking growth and leaving the whole space looking a little unloved.

The first task was to remove as much grass as possible from around the base of the trees. Not as quick and easy as it sounds. Before long a small but perfectly formed hay stack began to take shape.

That done, the main event was calling...the task of shifting the bark chippings took rather longer than hoped, but was satisfying when it was done.

It took quite some time and effort to complete the task...but the reward made it worthwhile...a delicious, much needed school dinner!

The memorial trees now have a bit more space to breathe and grow, and plans are already afoot for pupils to help with building a protective fence. Watch this space.
