Georgeta, Anita, Rachel and Sheila answered the call to support local charity Baby Matters in their initiative to supply refugee families with essentials such as shoes and clothing. The task was to check that donated items were clean and not too worn, and then sort into size. This was in preparation for the following day, when refugee families currently staying in a local hotel would be coming to select items for themselves. We started by sorting the men's clothing, and then were tasked with bagging up and labelling the pre-sorted childrens clothing according to gender. We had some interesting discussions about how gender-specific some clothes were! For a while we were joined by Melissa, one of the refugees from El Salvador, and although her English was limited (and our Spanish non-existant) it was interesting to hear from her about her family and life at the Holiday Inn. The boxes of clothes to bag up just kept coming - just as we thought we had it in the bag, another box would appear. We were fed and watered by the catering team as we worked. Well done to everyone for staying on far longer than intended, until the job was done. At the end we had a long line of neatly-sorted bags of clothes, all ready for the following day. Great work, team!
