Sweaty mangoes and chunky peaches were in front of me. Jordan, another City Harvest volunteer, joined me in making mixed crates of Mangoes and Peaches. The boxes of mango were interlocked and took an oomph to take them out. It was a workout for the arms as we keep stacking the crates. Peaches on the other hand felt light when carrying it around.
We put all the mangoes and peaches into crates and made two pallets of them. Today the pallet was made with 7 rows instead of the usual 6.
We ran out of crates by 7 pm, the first time this has happened
Jason then pulled a whole pallet of Romaine lettuce and asked us to make as many crates as possible as it was a busy day at City Harvest this morning.
We tried to find empty crates inside the warehouse and loaded them with as much lettuce as possible. As there were no more crates, we finished the shift by 7:10 pm. I had a cup of tea and a snack before leaving.
City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way, by distributing to organisations that feed the hungry.
