Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Rachel Carthy
Tracey and Gwyn joined Rachel for a litter picking session in Derby city centre. Extra GoodGym points to Tracey and Gwyn for their volunteering efforts as they'd already been helping out at Derby Cathedral that day, welcoming visitors to view the Gaia exhibition. See what they got up to on a previous session where they were spreading the word about GoodGym at the Cathedral here.
Although it was pretty dark by about 7pm, the city is well lit so the group were still able to easily find lots of litter to pick up. There were lots of fast food packaging items, half full coffee cups, two banana skins and even a phone case. The group found the scene of a party that looked to have been held in one of the large raised planters with lots of half empty bottles of spirits and plastic cups. A cool bag with a reusable ice pack was left on the bench it was found on, just in case someone returned for it.
A couple of people thanked the group for their work to keep the city centre looking it's best and free from rubbish and the group ended the session by viewing a planetary light display that was projected onto the side of Derby Cathedral.
The group were pleased to put new equipment to the test that had been donated from the Derby Parks team. New litter pickers and greatly appreciated hoops to hold bin bags open made a real difference to the session.
Just under half a mile was covered and two bin bags of rubbish collected by the group.
Thanks to Tracey and Gwyn for volunteering and for photos from the session.
