SESSION ORGANISER
Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Liv Wicks (She/Her)
We were met by some very welcoming and helpful community members who regularly help out at the Windmill. Knowing how lucky we were that the mission fell within the only few hours of the weekend where it wasn't raining, we quickly split up and got to work.
Frances, Charlotte and Aislin re-planted a tree in the neighbouring playground before heading off to clear some leaves and weeds. Chris and I also cleared some leaves (they compost them to save on buying supplies), before planting some bulbs around the benches. Despite being part of GoodGym for ten months this was my bulb planting virginity. We had strict instructions on spacing and depth. Very intrigued to go back and see the results in March!
Time flew and we all ended up staying an extra half and hour, before we headed off one of the friendly regular volunteers pointed out that since the council cut their funding they can only rely on volunteers to keep the space looking tidy and colourful. The perfect set up for GoodGym. Hopefully we will be back next month.
The Friends of Windmill Gardens (FoWG) were formed in 2003 with three aims: * to get the Grade II listed Brixton Windmill restored and opened for public visits – in 2002 it had been put on English Heritage's buildings at risk register; * to make Windmill Gardens park a more welcoming space for local people; * to have a new education centre at the windmill. Windmill Gardens gained a Green Flag Community Award in 2015 and we have just been judged again so our fingers are crossed that we will retain the award for the next two years.
