Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Slough runner
This was our first time at with this task owner so it was important to be fully briefed on the Terracycle scheme, the different waste streams, and how it all works in practice. This local recycling hub had been closed throughout lockdown and there was a backlog of some of the waste streams (eg coffee pods).
After a quick role play by Jen who acted as a member of the public dropping her bread wrappers off, Naomi jumped in to sort them and transfer them to the blue weighing bins.
Our main jobs today were packaging up the coffee pods and sorting and weighing the baby food pouches.
Up, Up and a-weigh...
In true Goodgym style we quickly formed a production line with Ruth, Naomi and Jen cleaning down the packaged up coffee pods and Sara on labelling and sellotaping duty.
In the meantime, Emily went on the hunt for a bowl of water and started rinsing out the baby food food pouches that the public hadn't quite cleaned sufficiently. Ruth moved onto sorting through the pouches and removing non recyclable items and Sara and Naomi started weighing them and boxing them up ready for collection.
Going forward and as the scheme expands there will be several plastic waste streams (pens and stationery, crisps packets, chocolate wrappers, toiletry products and packaging, biscuits and cake bar wrappers, milk bottle tops to name a few).
And that's a wrap
Did you know that individual quality street wrappers are compostable? We all learnt so much during this first stint and are really excited to see how this scheme grows....
As the scheme starts to open up again to the public from this week it looks like we will be making regular visits to help behind the scenes to keep the scheme running so watch out for future Community Missions.
