Spring is definitely on it's way, and Maidenhead community allotment needed help putting up a frame for their runner beans to grow up. Five intrepid Goodgymers turned up in the rain, and set to work. Sara, Sheila, Sol and Nicola took on the bean bed. After removing the membrane which had kept the weeds down over winter, we gave the bed a quick dig over. We selected the longest bamboo canes and placed them in pairs along the row, tying them up with string. Some horizontal canes tied everything together, and voila! the structure is all ready for the beans. We had a short break in the shed whilst the rain was particularly heavy, with just time for a quick selfie, but were soon back to work. Meanwhile, Rachel busied herself clearing the brassica beds of last season's crop. Our final task was to cover some raised beds with some netting. Well done to everyone for braving the rain with such good humour

The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
