Report written by Huw Davies
Our first of a few tasks helping LOROS this year and it was good to get going with their event booklets a little earlier than in 2019. If you've lived in Leicestershire for any length of time you've probably got a LOROS story. A family member, friend or colleague who will have been cared for by this wonderful hospice. It's a charity close to the hearts of everyone in the community and we are always proud to lend a hand whenever we can.
Dave and Mel kindly headed directly up to the task meeting point on Granville Road with just over 1,000 event booklets detailing the fundraising events LOROS are running this year. The rest of us took a route up New Walk (much nicer to head up at the start of a run rather than the end) to meet them. We split into two teams, Dave, Jen, Jimmy and Mel heading down the left hand side of London Road with Huw, Michaela, Natalie and Sharon taking the right. Our task was to politely ask any open business to put 20 or so of the booklets on their counter/windowsill for the public to take and/or read. As with last year most were only to happy to oblige with only the odd place declining. One or two even had a staff discussion over whether to accept or not - clearly an executive level decision!
We powered down the hill reached the bottom of London Road in good time, taking the opportunity to carry on down Granby St to the corner of Belvoir St. It looks like we distributed around 850 booklets in our time slot tonight. An excellent start!
The runners then headed off back past the station, down Tigers Way and to the King Power Stadium to do some sprint work on the open space outside the ground. Alas, it didn't bring the Foxes any luck later in the evening. Ho hum.
Next week a change of planned task as we will head out to help Sustrans maintain the National Cycle Network as things stand. The following week we're heading to Saffron Acres Community Heathland for some gardening and litter picking on their site.
Also, look out on the Facebook group (GoodGym Leicester Members) for some proposed dates for a volunteering stint at Aylestone junior parkrun. They are always on the lookout for volunteers so it would be great if we could head along one week to help out and enjoy a run together afterwards.
Happy running, HD
