SESSION ORGANISER
Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)
Every first Tuesday of the month, the Salvation Army in Nunhead welcomes the homeless to a meal, but during COVID-19 times, its a takeaway service.
I arrived quite early to see Mr. P (organiser) preparing the chicken thighs for the oven, but all he needed me to do was offer tea or coffee to the homeless people waiting in the park. There were only three in the park at the time as the dinner service doesn't start until 19:00. Only one wanted a coffee at that time. After serving him coffee we chatted about life as I was interested to hear how he ended up on the streets. Misfortunes and heart ache can turn your life upside down, but at the end of the day, it's you who can only pick yourself up.
I went back inside and continued with my previous task from last week: stamping the takeaway bags. I find it very therapeutic whilst the rest were helping out with the drinks and food service. In the end, only 11 people came for the food, but we had enough food for double that number. Therefore, seconds were offered to everyone's delight.
Looking forward to next month's edition.
