This week's session at the Community Allotment was all about getting it ready for winter. Gillian and Juli set about weeding the long bed behind the lavenders, getting rid of the invasive grasses and other weeds. Sheila loaded home-made compost out of the compost heap, and wheelbarrowed it up to the old tomato bed. Once a thick mulch had been applied, the bed was covered with weed suppressant fabric and weighed down with stones and old bricks. Before we left, we covered the beautiful newly-weeded bed with suppressant fabric to deter the weeds, again going on a scavenger hunt to find heavy objects to weigh it down. Special thanks to Gillian for the inspired report title!

The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
