Last night 10 runners ran and walked 2.5km to help the Friends of Park Hill park look after the park in the warm weather. After last week was cancelled due to the extreme heat wave, our come back saw us hit the ground running!
It was great last night to see some familiar faces after a few weeks away. Although some were a little uncertain about their fitness coming back to running, we took off at an easy pace with one group running and the other walking and we all made it in good time to meet Josie and Catherine outside the walled garden. Hannah had popped by to say Hello, and a couple of dogs from the Puppy Club wondered over to see us and wag a tail as well.
There were several jobs to be done in the park. Ingrid, Paul and Ollie set about litter picking in the main areas of the park. This was a specialist task today as it is suspected local wild fires at Shirley Hills were started due to the heat being magnified by glass bottles. With Good Gym on the case, the park was soon saved from any potential fires and a lot of other litter was tidied up too.
In the walled garden, the roses we planted a few weeks ago are having a tough time in the heat and need a little TLC. The Friends volunteers have been watering and pruning them, so we added a little bit of bonemeal feed and Ian and Karim gave them a good watering. Sam, Dovile, Magda and Ros weeded and hoed the patch around the new plants to give them space to grow and keep the garden looking good. Although it didn't look like there was too much to start with, they had soon cleared several wheel barrows to the compost heap.
After the hard work, Karim had a treat for us all and shared around ice lollies he had brought during the heat wave. They were delicious, thank you!
