Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Anwen Greenaway
Our Sunday task was really a treat this week: we finally got some sunshine breaking through the storm clouds of the last 2 weeks, so it was a joy to be outside.
Marston Community Garden occupies plots 6 and 7 at Court Farm allotments. They grow a variety of fruit and vegetables, and anyone from the community is welcome to get involved in looking after the plants and helping with the harvest. Fruit and veg is left on the sharing table and also distributed to more vulnerable local residents.
There is always plenty to be done at MCG, and we've enjoyed regular work parties there over the summer months. Now that autumn is well established we've switched from watering and weeding the raised beds, and today's tasks included weeding around the fruit bushes, weeding the open areas and pathways ready for woodchip, wheel-barrowing over several loads of mulchy woodchip, and rooting out potatoes. As a bonus, as the only Marston resident in attendance, Ben was awarded his very own patch to clear of weeds and turn into his personal raised bed.
2 hours of 13 GoodGymers wielding spades, forks and trowels resulted in an exciting new garden extension for Ben, some beautifully spread wood chip, weeded fruit bushes, and cleared paths, plus about a hundred weight of some of the largest and most interesting-shaped potatoes I have ever seen!
Everyone went home with a large bag of potatoes, so I'm looking forward to a week of sharing your potato recipes.
Thanks to Sarah for the report title.
