Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by York runner
It was a lovely sunny afternoon for a community mission at Naburn Bridge, although in our tyvek suits it did look more akin to community payback.
Peter - of York Greenways - had a task for us to erect a new display board using bits of scrap wood, the boards would be used to display art from the local colleges. Our other task was to paint several sections of the bridge in special gloopy, grey paint, over the rivets to protect from rust as well as covering some graffiti.
I have some ridiculously small paintbrushes
Barbara and I were the smallest people so we thought we should handle the tiny paintbrushes while Lizzie and Nick built the display board.
It was very satisfying filling in gaps of unpainted or flaked off paint, plus we were bathed in sunshine most of the time. Before we even realised, we'd been painting for well over an hour.
Lizzie came over to tell us that Nick had tried to saw his hand off, but fortunately has been unsuccessful. She'd come over because she was excitedly waiting to use the steel mallet to bang the planks into place but had to step away in case she became too eager.
The display board was a piece of precision engineering really; Nick and Lizzie were taking turns in sawing tiny bits off the ends of the planks until they were just the perfect length to be wedged between the steel girders.
With the painting finished and the planks well wedged, we gathered all the kit and made our way back to the storage containers.
Did you get a photo of your erection?
Turns out Nick was far too modest.
