Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Jane Yelloly
We were 5 runners and riders plus Brian and Ben from the Edible Forest.
Well done to Jacquetta on her 2nd mission with GoodGym and managing to cut down an entire dead tree which was blocking the light to the baby apples trees in the forest. And great to welcome back some old faces to the Forest - Luke, Rob and Kate.
After an essential plum tasting session to get our blood sugars up for forest work, the Famous Five almost became foresters and:
continued cutting down invasive perimeter trees started on the last session to let sunlight into the forest
several of us had our first go at drafting apple trees - pretty much breeding apple trees and as good as making a new GoodGym breed of apple!
making a slowworm SUPERhighway. Yes! A highway for useful slowworms to flourish and eat all the slugs in the veg patch
shook and shaked some apple trees to collect the fruit
watered some very thirsty trees
And we will all enjoy our fruity pickings from the session - plums, blackberries and apples.
A big thank you to Brian and Ben!
Develop and maintain a mixed orchard: 200 trees of heritage apple varities, pear, plums, quince, medlar, mulberry, nuts, pond, polytunnel ... We propagate apple trees and have panted 20 in local junior schools and have a tree nursery to grow trees up for local parks and wild life areas. We are in discussion with the council about planting trees in streets.
