Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
On Sunday morning, 5 Goodgym regulars made a trip to Penn Road Gardens, just off Holloway Road, to assist with the resident's monthly open volunteering day. Every last Sunday of the month, the community garden look out for helpers (gardening proficient or open to doing some heavy lifting!) for a few hours of hugely beneficial maintenance tasks.
David and John began by working on the main compost bins in the gardens- moving piles of rotted compost (mulched and ready for spreading) to the flower beds around the park, before shifting the new foliage and green waste into place. The new stuff will then become compost over winter, as long as it is kept moist and properly compacted.
Emily and Alison took it in turns to collect leaves and branches from off the main pathways around the gardens, ready to be composted. Area Activator Simon scouted the flower beds for litter, blown in from the main road or thoughtlessly tossed by park users.
The team at Penn Road Gardens were thrilled by the progress we had made with their winter project, and have invited us to return in January for more springtime gardening!
We were the first community group to get a contract from Islington Council to maintain the garden at the end of our street, and have made it useable for the residents and a beautiful space for the community to enjoy
