Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Alex Murtough (he/him)
Which one is it? Go on, which one's correct?
Is it '3 lovely weeders got to it' or is it '3 lovely weeder's got to it'?
... come on now, we're all waiting...
... drum roll please...
The answer is, of course, the second. Okay, OKAY, calm yourselves, you grammar-loving fiends, it's the first.
The reason why I've started on this little grammatical digression is not, as you might have been thinking, to raise the grammatical bar of the GG readership (the conscientious GG reader is in possession of the highest of grammatical standards). Nor, as you may also have been thinking, is it to start with a BANG and hook the reader in with a scintillating exposition of correct apostrophe usage (although, undoubtedly, this has been the effect). And neither is it to advertise the excellent addition to your book shelf, Alex Murtough's Guide to Excellent Grammar (this doesn't exist), albeit an excellent addition it would be.
'What was it then!?', I hear you cry! Well, yesterday, whilst a-weeding and a-tidying at Mrs A's, 3 intrepid good-deeders dived into the meaty and rewarding topic of grammar. Boy, do we know how to shake it down. Pop a call to the cool-police guys, for Marta, Vic, and I really know how to cut loose and boogie to the woogie (I can't believe I've just written this).
Anyway, enough of this silliness that you've forced me to write (how could you!?), and onto the more interesting topic of how Marta, Vic, and I added a little sparkle to Mrs A's garden in time for the summer sun.
Arriving at just gone 12 , we were met with the warm smile of Mrs A who swiftly showed us to her garden. A lovely space in need of a little sprucing, we set to work sprucing, weeding, sweeping, and tidying. Along the way, we shot the breeze. Vic and I quizzed the 'Good Deed Queen' herself, Marta (17 this month already, say what!), on how she does so much darn good, Marta and I wished Vic luck for Sunday's Hackney Half (go Vic!), Vic told us how she'd got two questions right at last night's pub quiz (name of The Fat Controller in Thomas the Tank Engine, anyone?), and we got into the nitty gritty of politics, religion, and grammar in between. Nice one.
80 minutes in and we'd stacked up 6 bags of weeds and given Mrs A's space a good ol' tidy. Leaving a space ready to be enjoyed, we said our good byes to Mrs A and walked back together to New Cross and Deptford....... to be greeted by a pub sign which may have been in need of a little GTLC (Grammar Tender Loving Care)......
